Overview:
El Grito del Delores is the 1910 shout of Hidalgo y Costilla’s for independence from Spain, which started the Mexican War for Independence. It is the single most important date for patriotic Mexicans, and is celebrated in a big way every year.
Chicago’s El Grito is one of the largest of its kind in the USA, bringing together Mexican families from all over the City of Chicago and it’s 9 collar counties.
It’s an outdoor festival that melds big entertainment, culture, history and solemn ceremony into one big must-attend annual event.
El Grito kicks off with major entertainment from a huge Main Stage that operates continuously. The EL Grito MainStage features a lineup that is purposefully diverse in its array of music formats. Visitors will hear Banda, Norteno, Tejano, Mariachi and Ranchera bands. Two large video screens flank the stage, while a third is positioned in another location to maximize crowd viewing.
Authentic Mexican food and drink are plentiful, and a Kid’s Area keep the young ones well occupied.
El Grito culminates in the re-enactment of the Cry of Delores, “El Grito” by the Chicago’s Mexican General Consul and other dignitaries will celebrate and reenact the Cry of Dolores, “El Grito” at the closing of this event.
The event takes place in Harrison Park just steps away from the Mexican Cultural Museum- a major participant in the event.
