A new spin on an old tradition…

The Lake County Fair event has some pretty impressive stats: it’s 93 years old, making it the oldest event in the area- and its total (normal) audience of 75,000+ makes it the largest event in all of Northern Illinois. And, for the area 4H members, farmers, horsemen and cattlemen – this event is the most important of the year.  

The Lake County Fair embodies the concept of continuity. Each year, since 1861, the county population gathers on the Lake County Fair Grounds to compete, to eat, to dance, to listen to live music, to see the prize-winning livestock, champion horses, dairy goats, pies and canned goods, to meet and greet new and old friends, take a ride on a carnival attraction and experience a wide variety of quality entertainment. 

21st century visitors may experience everything from a livestock show and auction, 4H competitions- animals, pies and vegetable growing, a Rodeo, motor sports, great rock and roll bands, local talent competitions, a huge carnival, Beer Gardens, horse shows, and much, much more. 

The overall old fashioned ambience of the event belies its very modern components- and this dichotomy adds a lot to it’s charm. Visitors experience the county’s agricultural heritage, and its strong sense of ecology as well as community- something not common in today’s fast paced world. The Lake County Fair is at once a visit to the past, the present and the future.
