49 is the big number this year in Chicago's Sheffield Historic District. It's the number of consecutive years that America's largest garden walk and festival has taken place.
Although the Sheffield Garden Walk expanded and evolved over these 46 years- this is one event that still treasures its traditions.
The Garden Walk:
Each year, 100 residents display their gardening prowess. The self guided Sheffield Garden Walk includes old and new gardens, some simple and some magnificent, as well as courtyards, lawns, decks and porches. There are Japanese styled gardens, wild gardens, formal English inspired gardens, Chicago-style gardens with funky and exotic objects on display- each inspiring and beautiful.
The Architectural Tours:
Four one-hour walking tours of this historic neighborhood showcase some of Chicago's most beautiful homes and row houses dating back to 1875. Walkers see and learn about Victorian area styles including Italianate, Romanesque, and Queen Anne.
Although Chicago is known for its great summer festivals, this one is in a class by itself.
The combination of a huge Craft Beer tasting tent (ticketed), a Main Stage featuring top name national and regional music acts, five favorite, premier local restaurants serving their full menus, and an elaborate Kids Korner puts this festival over the top- even by Chicago standards.
The Craft Beer Tent (ticketed) offers a four-hour session, from 1PM-5PM, each day. The tent takes on the feel of an authentic Belgium beer festival, where visitors will have the opportunity (for an additional cost) to sample and savor more than 100 craft beers.
The event's Main Stage hosts a concert featuring a major national musical act each night. The Main Stage concert area is ticketed.
Meanwhile, the Festival Stage features regional and the best of Chicago local bands. More than 10 bands will perform over two days. The music lineup of the Sheffield Garden Walk & Festival Stage has a long standing reputation for high quality entertainment that always draws large crowds.
A big draw for area families is the Kids Korner- an entire block jam packed with things kids love to do. There are carnival rides, pony rides, music and storytelling, an elaborate petting zoo and various games.
Five local premier restaurants each serve their full menu, giving visitors quality food options ranging from American favorites to various ethnic cuisines.
Approximately 400 volunteers from this upscale, tightly knit community help run the event, and proceeds go right back to the community.
